Whether you’re chasing a personal best, recovering from a heavy training block, or simply carrying tension that won’t shift, targeted soft-tissue treatment can help you move and feel better. At Enhance Sports Physio, our sports and remedial massage is delivered with the same evidence-based approach we bring to all our care, with clinics in Essendon and Williamstown, in the heart of Melbourne’s north and inner west.

What is sports and remedial massage?

Sports and remedial massage is hands-on treatment of the muscles, tendons and connective tissue to address areas of tension, restricted movement and overload. Unlike a relaxation massage, the focus is functional: identifying which tissues are contributing to your symptoms and treating them with techniques matched to your goals, from firm deep-tissue work through to lighter, recovery-focused treatment.

It’s particularly useful alongside an active program. Massage can settle a tight, irritable area enough to let you keep training and loading, while the underlying strength and movement work does the heavy lifting on the actual fix.

Who is it for?

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to benefit. We see:

  • Runners and team-sport athletes managing training load and muscle soreness
  • Gym-goers and lifters with tight or overworked areas
  • Office workers with neck, shoulder and upper-back tension
  • People in the late stages of rehab who want soft-tissue work as part of their recovery
  • Anyone who trains hard and wants to recover and feel ready for the next session

What to expect in a session

Your therapist will start with a brief chat about your training, your symptoms and what you want out of the session, then a quick movement check where relevant. Treatment is tailored to you, and the pressure is always within your comfort. You’ll usually leave with a clear sense of what was treated and, where useful, one or two simple things to do between sessions to hold the benefit.

If we think your issue needs more than soft-tissue work to resolve properly, we’ll tell you, and point you toward the right next step, whether that’s a physiotherapy assessment or a tweak to your training.

When sports massage helps

Soft-tissue treatment can support:

  • Muscle tightness and trigger points
  • Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after hard training
  • General recovery between sessions or events
  • Tension-related neck, shoulder and back discomfort
  • Maintaining range and comfort while you work through a strength-based rehab plan

Massage is excellent for short-term relief of muscle tension and soreness and for supporting recovery, but lasting change in pain and performance comes from progressive loading and addressing the cause. We treat massage as one valuable tool, not the whole solution, which is exactly why a physio-led setting works in your favour.

Why choose a physio-led clinic?

Plenty of places offer massage. What’s different at Enhance is the clinical context around it. Our team understands tissue healing, training load and return-to-sport criteria, so your treatment sits inside a bigger picture rather than as a standalone fix. If something more is going on, you’re already in the right place, with direct access to assessment, rehab and performance testing under one roof.

FAQ

They overlap heavily. “Sports massage” usually emphasises athletes, training load and recovery, while “remedial massage” is the broader clinical term used for treating muscle and soft-tissue complaints. In practice the techniques are similar, and at Enhance we tailor the session to your goals rather than the label.

No. You can book directly without a GP or specialist referral.

Sessions run for either 30 or 45 minutes, depending on your preference.

Treatment can be firm, but pressure is always kept within your comfort and adjusted to you. You should feel worked-on, not in pain.

It depends on your goals. Some people come in around heavy training or events, others on a regular maintenance basis. Your therapist can suggest a sensible rhythm for you.
